Sales of "1" -- a compilation of the Fab Four's 27 number one hits -- took off during the day after a poor initial response when HMV opened its major London shop specially at midnight on Sunday to sell the album. It turned out to be a hard day's night for staff when only 15 people pitched up as the doors opened. Beatles producer George Martin, sometimes dubbed the fifth member of the group, said: "It barely took eight years to cover this collection -- 'Love Me Do' to 'The Long And Winding Road' -- but it was a lifetime in the world of rock and roll."
