Archeological studies and radar surveys have located the site of George Washington's distillery at Mt. Vernon. A four-year project to complete the excavation and renovation of the site will now begin.
WASHINGTON, Dec. 6 — A history lesson you may have missed: The nation's first president also ran one of the largest whiskey distilleries of his time.Archaeologists at George Washington's historic home at Mount Vernon, Va., down the Potomac River from the capital, uncovered the foundation of Washington's 75-by-30-foot distillery during a 1997 survey.For two summers, archaeologists have excavated at the site, almost two miles from the tourist-filled main house.
